There are three things you have to remember when you think of good salami; a nice long dry, a good use of spices, and Molinari Delicatessen. Famous for its Salami and other dried meats Molinari Delicatessen has something for even the snootiest Italian Deli fan.
Located on Columbus Avenue, between Grant Avenue and Vallejo Street, Molinari Delicatessen has been a staple of San Francisco for over a hundred years, making it one of the oldest delis still in bussiness in the United States.
Molinari Delicatessen was founded in 1895 by P.G. Molinari. Originally located on Broadway, the 1906 San Francisco earthquake forced him to move it to Columbus Street, where it was located until 1962.
Molinari Delicatessen has been a family business since day one. After World War 1, P.G’s sons (Frank and Angelo) joined there father as business partners; and after P.G’s retirement in 1950, Franks son in law (Peter Girogi); and in 1978 P.G’s great grandson (Frank Giorgi) joined the family business of making great food.
Since Day one Molinari Delicatessen has been a name of quality, and a family owned business. There are a wide selection of sandwiches and sides both hot and cold. Locals recommend the pasta salad (which includes that amazing salami, fresh homemade mozzarella, and creamy Italian dressing) as a side and the Renzo Special (which consists of prosciutto, coppa, fresh mozzarella, with sun dried tomatoes) as the meal. There is also a wide selection of “We Make You Bake” meals if you are in a hurry. Get there early as they tend to be packed. Be prepared to select from a wide selection of fresh bread for your sandwich. If the unthinkable happens and you can't try this San Fransisco staple you can also order their famous salamis and dried meats at http://www.molinarisalame.com/.
