Gourmet comfort food comes to the Mission District with Grub, the latest addition to the late-night dining scene. From the upscale mac and cheese bar to the extensive and sophisticated wine list, Grub puts a new twist on old favorites. The restaurant’s modern industrial interior was designed by hot San Francisco architecture firm NC2.

Grub has a long wine list and a good selection of bottled craft beers. The appetizer menu is an eclectic mix of old standbys and new ideas. French fries are elevated by a drizzle of truffle oil. A romaine salad has persimmon, watermelon radish, spiced walnuts and goat cheese. Or try the roasted cauliflower gratin with pork belly. Grub’s dinners are similarly creative twists on familiar poultry, seafood and meat dishes.

If you’re looking for comfort food, though, go for Grub's burger bar or mac and cheese bar. The burger bar offers an organic beef, buffalo, veggie or turkey burger with your choice of six cheeses and several toppings and sauces. If you like things spicy, try a buffalo burger with jalapeno jack cheese, applewood bacon and a dash of sriracha aioli. Or you could do up your veggie burger with aged gruyere, sautéed mushrooms and citrus barbecue sauce.

The most popular item at Grub has got to be the mac and cheese bar. Start with basic fusilli (regular or gluten-free) tossed with white and sharp cheddar cheeses and parmesan breadcrumbs. Then choose from a long list of “toss-ins” to mix with your mac, including steak, grilled chicken breast, Maine lobster, sautéed mushrooms, chorizo, arugula, goat cheese, and many more. You could come to Grub dozens of times and never eat the same mac and cheese twice.

On weekends, Grub serves indulgent brunch items and beverages, including a bottomless mimosa.

Grub is open for dinner weeknights until 10 p.m. and Friday and Saturday until 11 p.m. The weekend brunch is served all day, from 10 a.m. until closing.
